Windows 11 is Released, Should We Update or Stay?

Article written by Fayusri Royfanto, K3519033

On October 5th, 2021, Microsoft announced that Windows 11 can be downloaded on some Windows 10 devices for free. Surely this is the moment that has been awaited for those who are tired of Windows 10 and want to get refreshment on their devices. It’s been 6 years since Windows 10 has been on the air with PC users, and now the latest version of Windows is available, namely Windows 11.

But before that, what are the superior features of Windows 11? Here are some advantages that the author can summarize.

1. A Fresher Look

Tired of the look of Windows 10 that may have accompanied you for the last 6 years since its first release? Or are you a Windows user, but want your PC to look like Apple’s Mac OS? If so, Windows 11 should be a little refreshing for your eyes. The reason is, the interface of Windows 11 is at first glance similar to Mac OS. With the taskbar in the middle, along with the start menu which is now in the middle.

Moreover, the appearance of other menus has also changed. Although it’s almost similar to Windows 10, this is a change. Looks cool, right?

2. Ability To Run Android Apps Without Emulator

Hey, who likes to play android games on a PC, but often experiences bugs from the emulator they use? Or often the CPU runs up to 100% because of the load from the emulator? Take it easy, in the future Microsoft promises that Windows 11 can install Android applications through the Microsoft Store or using the application installer itself.

However, it seems that this feature is still not usable and is still in the development stage. The reason is, in yesterday’s update, it has not been found to include an update on the ability to install Android applications. Apparently, users who crave features like this should be patient first.

3.  Xbox App Update

The Xbox menu is already in Windows 10, which is really useful for gamers who want to record their gameplay. But, in Windows 11, the Xbox menu itself gets a pretty tempting update. Like the auto HDR on the Xbox Series X / S, it’s presented in Windows 11.

Furthermore, there is also a DirectStorage feature that allows us to access game assets more quickly using a graphics card, without burdening the CPU. This feature will certainly benefit gamers who want the games they play to run more smoothly.

Windows 11 also now supports DirectX 12 Ultimate. DirectX 12 Ultimate itself supports a higher frame rate than DirectX 12 on Windows 10

4. Integrasi Microsoft Team Chats

For Windows users who often have online meetings, now Microsoft Team Chats is integrated right into the dock. So, its use will be easier and faster. It also looks fresher. So for Microsoft Teams users, congratulations! This update will make it easier for you to access Microsoft Teams.

Windows 11 has some drawbacks that the author finds quite annoying.

1. High Minimum Specification

The specifications required by Windows 11 are quite high. Microsoft applies the TPM 2.0 standard so that computers can be installed with Windows 11. TPM 2.0 itself is an international standard led by the Trusted Computing Group. This standard provides a secure area for storing authentication keys that are built into device hardware. TPM 2.0 functionality can be firmware based, integrated on silicon or in-device modules. Now, with this standard, users who want to upgrade to Windows 11 must have specifications that meet these standards.

For users who do not have specifications that meet the TPM 2.0 standard, there are several ways that can be done to tweak it. Of course, do it at your own risk. Even so, Microsoft itself provides fairly standard specifications, such as the following:

  • Processor: 11 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit  or System on a Chip (SoC)
  • RAM: 4 GB or more
  • Storage: 64 GB or more
  • System Firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot Capable
  • TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0
  • Graphics Card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver
  • Display: High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9” diagonally, 8 bits per color channel
  • Internet connection and Microsoft account:
    • Windows 11 Home edition requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account.
    • Switching a device out of Windows 11 Home in S mode also requires internet connectivity.
    • For all Windows 11 editions, internet access is required to perform updates and to download and take advantage of some features. A Microsoft account is required for some features.

Even so, there is quite a lot of users complained that their devices cannot install Windows 11, even though they are already above the minimum specifications given by Microsoft itself.

2. 100% Disk Usage Issue

100% disk usage is a daily companion for Windows 10 users, especially those who still use the hard disk as their OS storage. Is this issue solved when we update to Windows 11? Everyone hopes so, but it turns out that the issue has not immediately healed. The issue of 100% disk usage is still annoying for Windows 11 users who use the hard drive.

The only solution is to upgrade the storage to SSD. But for some people, to save money, of course, they still think twice about switching to SSD. But reading the high specifications above, users who can use Windows 11 should be using an SSD as the storage.

Well, even so, SSD users are still experiencing the 100% disk usage in Windows 11, because Windows Defender often scans so suddenly.

Yep, that’s a brief review for windows 11. There are advantages and disadvantages to an OS, and it is common. For Windows 11, several web reviewers such as JagatReview also wrote the same thing. For the author himself, by looking at the advantages and disadvantages, the author will give a score of 9/10 if the Android application installation feature without an emulator is working. Because the author himself needs some android applications and can’t install them on his cellphone due to limited storage and time required.

Without the ability to install android applications, then the score becomes 8.5/10. There are some aspects that Microsoft could improve on, such as the minimum specs being optimized even more and not adding more unnecessary things. Moreover, the prices of laptops and computer parts themselves are soaring, making most users only use devices with makeshift specifications. Regardless of the score that the author gave, are you interested in upgrading to Windows 11? Or are you still comfortable with Windows 10?
